I had one for years. They're great.  Not heard anyone say they're bad. If you like the coffee who cares.
Yeah, this. It is a great entry to espresso. It costs 6x as much to get something that improves your game 20%. Id recommend to anyone. I can't force myself to sell mine. I'll take it to my next office.

Not bad. I recently started to try latte art, and it’s a lot harder than I thought.
I have one and love it. The grinder isn't perfect, but it's perfectly capable of producing excellent shots. I'm able to consistently pull manual shots that rival or even exceed those I get from my favorite local coffee shops. I think the BBE gets hate in the espresso community because a lot of the loudest voices here are from folks with $1000+ dollar setups, and ofc the BBE isn't going to rival t…

Tom's Coffee Corner — Breville Barista Express Review: Amazon's Best Selling Semi-Automatic

Pros & cons

✓ Strengths

  • Integrated conical burr grinder — saves counter space on a separate grinder
  • 16 grind settings + dose control
  • PID temp control + LPI pre-infusion
  • Full-size 67oz water tank (≈2L) — refill less often
  • Manual articulating steam wand — teaches milk steaming properly
  • Hot water function — for Americano
  • Parts and community support 10+ years

✗ Weaknesses

  • Big footprint 318×351mm — eats up a 60cm shelf
  • Height 404mm + bean hopper above — cabinet clearance needed
  • Grinder noise 75-78dB at the dose (15s)
  • Stock conical burr grinder is limited — too weak for light roasts
  • 54mm portafilter — Breville-specific, not universal 58mm prosumer
  • Only 1-year warranty (vs Bambino Plus 2-year)

Buy if / Skip if

Buy if

  • Tier 2 apartments with counter ≥35cm wide and cabinet clearance ≥45cm
  • Anyone who wants a one-box solution and doesn't want to buy a separate grinder
  • Budget $500-700 with no plan to upgrade for 3-5 years

Skip if

  • Counter <35cm — won't fit
  • Light roast primary — stock burr is weak, you'll have to upgrade the grinder separately (which defeats the point)
  • You want to learn on an easy machine → Bambino Plus + a separate grinder is better

Frequently asked · apartment edition

Will the Breville the Barista Express fit a 13-inch counter?

At 12.5″ wide, yes — with about -0.5″ of clearance left over after a 1″ margin for steam wand swing. For tighter counters under 12″, use the Will-It-Fit calculator above.

Is the Breville the Barista Express loud enough to wake my partner?

Estimated ~75 dB during the pump cycle — enough to wake a sleeping partner through a thin wall. Vibratory pumps cycle for ~10–25 sec per shot, then go quiet. The grinder is usually louder than the brew cycle.

Does it need plumbing?

No. The Breville the Barista Express runs entirely off its own water tank — no water line, no drain. Standard for renter-friendly machines.

Will it run on a standard US 110V outlet?

Yes — native 120V (US). Plug into any standard outlet. No 220V dedicated circuit needed.

Who should skip the Breville the Barista Express?
  • Counter <35cm — won't fit
  • Light roast primary — stock burr is weak, you'll have to upgrade the grinder separately (which defeats the point)
  • You want to learn on an easy machine → Bambino Plus + a separate grinder is better
How long is the warranty?

1 years from Breville on the machine. Amazon adds 30-day returns on top. Most failures Reddit users report happen after the warranty — specifically the steam-wand and pump cycle.

Who is the Breville the Barista Express best for?
  • Tier 2 apartments with counter ≥35cm wide and cabinet clearance ≥45cm
  • Anyone who wants a one-box solution and doesn't want to buy a separate grinder
  • Budget $500-700 with no plan to upgrade for 3-5 years
